![]() Both series set rating records for the channel, doubling their previous highs. Though the idea didn’t quite pan out for Syfy, both Frank Herbert’s Dune and Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune received several Emmy nominations, taking home three in total. ![]() In the interview, Executive Producer Richard Rubinstein, who had previously worked on well-received TV adaptations of Stephen King’s The Stand and The Langoliers, says “there’s a wonderful marriage to be had between long, complicated books and the television miniseries.” He envisioned a future where the miniseries, which then-Syfy President Bonnie Hammer refers to as “a lost genre,” becoming a mainstay thanks to the rise in interest in epic, multipart features like Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Note Bene: The television miniseries version of "Dune" is vastly superior to the feature film version that preceded it.Last month, the New York Times published a cover story titled “The Man Who Finally Made a ‘Dune’ That Fans Will Love.” Would you believe this wasn’t the first cover story about Frank Herbert’s esoteric sci-fi epic? Back in 2003, Warren Berger published an interview with several cast and crew members that worked on the then-airing follow-up to Syfy’s (née Sci-Fi Channel) 2000 adaptation Frank Herbert’s Dune. #CHILDREN OF DUNE TV MINI SERIES STREAM MOVIE#If you are considering this movie and have not seen its predecessor, check out "Dune" and skip this one. "Lord O f The Rings" and "Dune" have been released as movies and both have suffered from the same thing, the conflict between the creative genius of the authors of the talesĪnd the sensibilities of the movie industry movers and shakers. The two greatest (arguably) fantasy epics of the 20th Century, If you are a fan of the great writing of Frank Herbert, The only part that was somewhat interesting was the possession of Paul's sister by the spirit of Baron Harkonnen. Quite a number of the original cast were replaced, which doesn't help. The acting, screenplay and cinematography were all weak although not terribly so by television standards. The first miniseries had elements of this, but they were not as prominent and therefore somewhat forgivable. It reduces Frank Herbert's classic Science fiction story to a lurid soap-opera like tale. This continuation of the excellent "Dune" miniseries, "Children Of Dune" is a failure of the same magnitude that the first miniseries was a success. I didn't dislike the movie, just wished for a more fulfilling experience. I am glad I got it, I will watch it again to register the specifics more attentively. Having said that, the movie (as was said by Frank Herbert of the original Dune movie) is the best that could be done at the time even with the compromises necessary to meet budget and time constraints. The story is too grand, the written characters too well defined, the language too preci se, too elegant, to be conveyed in summarization attempts in dialogue. The dialogue, frequently used to convey the story, was stilted, limited, even mechanical at times. The books cannot be represented well on TV. A sincere attempt to capture the essence of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune that has the same limitations of the two original Dune movies. A gift of allowed me to chance upon the TV miniseries and I went for it greedily. However, when the new hard cover of Children of Dune came out recently, I read it and realized I had forgotten the depth and wealth contained therein. Frank Herbert is my favorite author and God Emperor is my favorite of the series. I have even recorded several of the books for the blind.
